You might have a faulty head.

download MHDD from www.hddguru.com and boot the system (with the problem hdd attached to the system as secondary master), after entering MHDD, press F2, it will show you "Maxtor Romulus"

find a donor PCB, swap the ROM (if available and the donor match) just make sure, no clicking sounds from the hard drive.

i have what seems to be a bad pcb on mine reads then clicks in harmony. looking for a pcb board for this

I did another experiment.

I have two similar working HDDs. One with 3.02 and another with 3.03 firmware revision.

I swapped the PCB between them. All of a sudden BIOS does not recognise both ...
