When replacing a hard drive do I have to reinstall Windows, or would the windows software stay on the computer?

I have a Dell Optiplex gx270 with a bad hard drive and a bad motherboard!

You need to reinstall if you're replacing the drive Windows was installed on. If it was the only hard drive in the system, you need to reinstall.

Do you have a Windows install disc? Or a system restore disc? If so, use it. Otherwise, you will have to buy a new one. Sometimes when you buy new hard drives you can get Windows bundled with them for a lower price. (If you don't have a disc, I would check with Dell about what to do.)

I have a disc that came with my Dell, but I wasn't sure if it had Windows XP software on it. I guess I can give it a try, and if that doesn't work, I am going over to Dell store.

The disc I have is the system recovery (driver recovery) disc. Do you think this has what I need?
