hey all!

this forum is the best i have found for troubleshooting these hdds.

i have a 160GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9, which will not spin up. there is no sign of movement/noise at all. i would sometimes have to 'pump' the power switch to get it to be recognised by the bios. also the ventilation was not the best, so maybe heat damage. I am hoping that it is just a fried board, but it sounds like it could be stiction.

what does this problem sound like? mech or elec?

does anyone have a PCB that matches the specs to swap out this board?

160GB HDD-
firmware# YAR41VW0
revision#(next to barcode-IDE): 2602303CMY

also, i found an old 60GB (smaller drive) and just by chance it has the same FIRMWARE but not revision#. will this possibly work?

60GB HDD-
firmware# YAR41VW0
revision#(next to barcode-IDE): 1903305CMY

the 1st number doesnt match so i am guessing 'NO'...

if a pcb swap doesnt work, i plan to do the freezer trick (antistatic and ziplock bags)

thanks so much in advance, im scrambling for options here. i have certainly learnt my backup lesson. half finished work is in limbo Sad

i ordered a 160GB hdd from ebay (US$120 later), unfortunately it had YAR41BW0 as the firmware, the harddrive spun up and i thought it was going to work, but BIOS wouldnt recognise it as the Maxtor model that it was, only as Maxtor Calypso, which meant the board swap didnt work...i looked around at places (such as softcom), but i couldnt find a replacement board.

i was getting desperate at this point. I took the plunge and wacked the 60GB board into the 160GB with, hoping that it wouldnt damage the drive platters/contents......

woot! it worked... i should have just put it there in the first place. better to be safe than sorry. i now have all my data backed up onto a western digital and DVDs in case that goes.

thanks to these forums i was able to find my answer by trawling through peoples experiences. thank god i didnt have to invest in a data recovery specialist which i cannot afford.

thanks guys, ive been saved! Smile Smile Smile
