my 400GB backup drive just took a **** with 300GB worth of valuable and invaluable data saved on it. I need to repair this drive, and this is my only option at this point. I need the green PCB board, or entire hard drive if you don't need it, for a 400GB Western Digital Caviar SE16...

model WD4000KD-00NAB0
dcm HBHCAJAA

I'm not sure what these go for, name a price if you have what I need and I'll see what I can do. Thanks!

p.s. I can hear the platters spinning when I twist the drive, the logic board should fix it right up, right?

Hi, thanks for your reply.

The only number I see that matches anything close to the model number you gave is 2061-701310-C00 AD

The rule of thumb appears to be that, if a drive spins up, or if it tries to spin up, then the board is probably OK. Instead the problem is most likely with the HDA (head/disc assembly).

If, OTOH, the drive makes no noise at all, and does not attempt to spin up, then the board is probably faulty.

In any case, when swapping boards, be prepared to transplant any serial EEPROM chip from patient to donor. This chip contains unique drive specific calibration data. Can you see an 8-pin chip at U12?

If your drive spins up, it's most likely not a board problem.

Hi, is the U12 located on the inside portion of the board? I don't see anything marked U12 on the underside of the drive, and I haven't yet taken the logic board off the drive.

The drive only spins when I twist is manually in my hands... There is no power whatsoever nor any attempt to spin up when it's plugged in.

I also need to make a correction, the number I posted before was on the barcode, not the actual board.. the board's serial number is 2060-701310-004 Rev A

Would I be able to use a board from a WD4000YR-00PLB0 successfully as long as it shares the 2060-701310-004 REV A model number? I can swap my U12 out no problem once I get a star wrench.

You might simply have a bad cable connection to a PCB.

Check the connections under the board. Give the motor contacts and preamp contacts a scrub with a soft white pencil eraser.
