I have a hard drive IBM Deskstar and have wondered if anyone has had a similar problem where the hard drive moter whirs like it's trying to start but then dies, then whirs again, then dies again.... I found that freezing it did allow it to whir more, allowing the computer to detect it, but once Windows booted, the computer seemed to freeze while the drive continued to start and stop. I never got it far enough to retrieve data off it. I think the problem might be that I previously used it with a usb power supply of 2 amps and maybe damaged the moter by under-supplying the required amperage. So the question is whether a PCB exchange is going to help, (maybe a bad power supply part of the board) or whether the motor spindle itself is now defective. I don't believe there's a way to replace the motor itself.
I also did do the board replacement on a clicking laptop drive but it didn't fix it. Any pointers are appreciated. Thanks. |

I have this exact same problem with a 185 gig Deskstar. Please let me know if you discover anything interesting.
In the meanwhile, I'm thinking of paying $1500 to DriveSavers to perform a "raw dump" of my drive...
FWIW, my model number IC35L180AVV207-1, part number: 07N9216 |

This sounds like a stalled motor or a stalled head on a drive.
This is very common problem on a IBM-Hitachi drives.
You can check it by placing a board from a similar drive to see if it would spin up a drive. _________________ www.datarecoveryne.com |
