hey there.. love the forum. I have a Seagate 400 gig drive that's reasonable new and out of the blue started clicking. After being quoted prices from 800-1500 to recover the data.. I happened upon this site.. and was excited to findout I could change the board on the outside in the hopes of saving it. Long story short.. I tracked down the exact HD on ebay.. exact firmware.. got it.. switched em .. and no change. Still clicks like crazy. Question is.. is it really necessary to have a "clean room?" Or is taking these HDs apart something I can attempt? I have the identical drive.. would love to just swap out whatever part is causing the incessant clicking!

thanks!

Best approach is to diagnose a problem of your drive and then fix the problem.
Guessing is the last thing you want to do with a hard drive.

Your drive most likely has one of the following issues:
failed heads
corrupted Service Area
damaged platters

Unfortunately, non of those problems easy to solve.

I would not recommend openning a drive for any reason, because as soon as you will open a lid, quote for a recovery will double if not triple.

Recommendation: search for reliable/known data recovery company, which charge reasonable prices.
