I need to replace the board of my 60GB drive (motor control chip burnt, which seems very frequent).
According to Maxtor support, the replacement board does not need to come from a disk with the same capacity, but some letters and numbers must be identical on the model (GTLA) number of both drives :

"For the following Maxtor hard drive models: Fireball 3, DiamondMax 16, DiamondMax Plus 8, and DiamondMax Plus 9 there is also a GTLA Number on the model (next to barcode on the bottom of the drive). Format 1Y222J2223322. 1, 2 and 3 stand for numbers, Y and J for letters. The numbers 1 and 3 as well as the letter Y need to be identical to be able to replace the PCB on these drives. "

In my case, this means that the GTLA number of the drive must include the following numbers at their place : 6Y-------04--

For those who might be interested, I have adrive with a good board which I bought before I knew the compatibility rule to replace muy dead board but it's not compatible (two number differ).
