I've got 2 questions I haven't been able to find the answers anywhere..

1) How does a Hard Drive spindle motor work? I'm guessing there's 3 or more poles, and the controller powers them in sequence, but is there a ground, and then the coils, or are they arranged some other way? Does anyone have a schematic of a HD motor?

2) Somewhat related to the first... How does the HD know the speed of the platter motor? How does it know when the platter is at the right speed? How does it know when to drive the coils in the motor?

Three phase plus a GND

Servo feedback loop from the motor

When the motor is at speed +- a % then the heads unload and fine tuning is maybe done from the heads.... "Servo Lock"

Thanks for the reply. Basically, I'm trying to use a Hard Drive motor in another application. Do you have a simple circuit, or any advice on how to power the motor without the rest of the HD? I'd like to be able to change the spped.
