My hard drive was on and running in my laptop and it got knocked into. Hard drive soon had a clicking and a rattling sound. I made a clean room in my house and discected the drive. There was a piece loose inside, and now I can't figure out where it fits in.

The drive is a Fujitsu model MHT2040AH 40gb 2.5" ide laptop hard drive.

Any ideas on what exactly this item is and where it goes/supports/hooks on to? thanks!

The drive is ruined. You should just replace it. It is most likely that the drive suffered a head crash when knocked.
