Same drive number, same DCM, different board number (the number on the ide connector)

Does it matter?

Horace,

Western Digital PCB are Pain in the ass to match the underline code on the white label is serial number.

If both PCB as the same model number, same DCM and both pcb has the same configuration, you have nothing to loose to try the swap. Incompatible board will spin up and down with a clicking noise.

If you are equip for it your best shot will be to unsolder U12 from the bad board and solder it to the good PCB.

ok i finally figured out what u12 actually is

how the hell do i sodder that without running the sodders together

with this appearing to be a multi layer pcb , how do i de sodder it (im used to heating the bottom and pulling whatever out)

There is multi way to unsoldering I tried muti tools from cheap (toaster) to expensive (IrDa Soldering machine) I personally like a butane heat gun. For your need a regular 25W soldering iron and some wick will do the job you shou try to solder/unsolder on broken board before trying on yours if you overheat the U12 you might kill the Microcode on it and matching Western digital PCB without a ROM swap is almost impossible.

you can also type "surface mount soldering" on youtube you will find a lot of video showing you how to do it without expensive tools.

An other good alternative might be to go to a local TV repair shop and ask them to swap the chip for you they should have all the require equipment and knowledge to do it plus they shouldn't cahrge you more then a half an hour to do the job.

i assume i will need to remove and possibly replace c111 and r129 as they are really colse to u12
